Is California A State That Licenses Naturopathic Doctors?
As of January 1, 2004, the state of California is licensed for the practice of
Naturopathic Medicine, as former Governor Gray Davis signed Bill SB907. This
entitles doctors of Naturopathic Medicine, who have graduated from a four-year
accredited Naturopathic Medical School and who have successfully passed the national
board examination, to legally practice Naturopathic Medicine in the state of
California as primary care physicians.
Because, until recently, there was no regulation of the term Naturopath in
California, there are many alternative health care practitioners using the term that
have varying levels of training and are not doctors. In recognition of the fact, the
law allows these practitioners to continue to provide non-medical services under the
designations: Naturopath, Naturopathic Practitioner, or Traditional Naturopathic
Practitioner. Please be aware of the differences and research your chosen
practitioner if they have the title of Naturopathic Doctor. Here are a few links to

Are Naturopathic Doctors Covered By Insurance?
Since NDs are newly licensed in California, insurance companies are slowly starting to recognize
Naturopathic Doctors. California Naturopathic Doctors Association is working hard for this
recognition. Dr. Foster provides her patients with a super bill and the appropriate
codes, which they can submit to their insurance companies for reimbursement. We
cannot guarantee insurance coverage, but more patients in our office are getting
reimbursed. We do not bill insurance directly.
